Somalia Formally Ends All Agreements with UAE in Dramatic Sovereignty Move

Somalia’s federal government has officially annulled every bilateral agreement with the United Arab Emirates, including high-profile port management contracts, defense pacts, and security cooperation deals. The sweeping cancellation, confirmed on January 12, strips UAE entities of operational rights at strategic Red Sea facilities and ends military training programs, citing repeated infringements on Somali sovereignty.

The decision caps years of friction, exacerbated by perceived Emirati backing for regional actors and influence in Somaliland, as well as Israel’s recent recognition of the breakaway territory. Mogadishu framed the move as essential to protect national unity, while the Arab Parliament expressed support against foreign interference.

Observers note the rupture could complicate counter-terrorism efforts against al-Shabaab and strain Somalia’s economy at a time when the country is navigating delayed 2026 elections and fragile transitional politics. The African Union has reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity, highlighting the broader geopolitical stakes in the Red Sea corridor.
