Maalimin Division was officially operationalised on Friday, ending years of waiting since it was first gazetted.

The commissioning of the unit of government opens a new chapter for local administration and service delivery in Lagdera Constituency.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, Lagdera MP Mohamed Abdikadir and Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo joined residents and local leaders in marking the milestone.

Lagdera MP Mohamed Abdikadir said the institutionalisation is a major step toward bringing government services closer to the people.

Mr. Abdikadir said the division’s activation will improve administrative efficiency, strengthen security coordination and reduce the distance residents travel to access essential services.

He welcomed the move, noting “fully functional administrative unit enhances accountability and deepens grassroots governance by decentralising key public services.”

During the visit, leaders laid the foundation stone for Maalimin Girls’ Senior Secondary School, a project aimed at expanding access to education for girls in the area.

Garissa Governor Nathif pledged county support to fast-track its completion to empower girls and open up greater opportunities.

Mr. Jama also inaugurated the new Afwein Maternity at Afwein Dispensary, improving access to safe maternal healthcare.

He announced plans to upgrade the facility to a Level III health centre to provide additional services, including laboratory and expanded outpatient care.

He further revealed plans to improve infrastructure at Afwein Secondary School and establish a mini-grid power project to supply electricity to Maalimin and Afwein towns — a development expected to spur business growth and improve living standards.

The operationalisation of Maalimin Division will enable equitable development and inclusive growth across Garissa.
