IPOA Probes Death at Kitengela ODM Rally

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into a fatal incident that occurred during a political rally in Kitengela, Kajiado County, on February 15, 2026.

In a statement issued on Monday, IPOA confirmed that it had been monitoring police conduct during political gatherings held in both Mombasa and Kajiado counties to ensure adherence to Article 244 of the Constitution and established policing standards.

IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Wanjiku said the Authority noted with concern reports of a death and several injuries during the Kitengela rally, allegedly occurring as officers from the National Police Service (NPS) sought to maintain law and order.

“The Authority has deployed a rapid response team comprising monitoring and investigations officers to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Wanjiku said.

According to IPOA, the probe is being conducted under the relevant provisions of the NPS Act and the IPOA Act, which mandate the oversight body to hold police accountable for misconduct and ensure operations comply with the law.

The investigation will seek to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatality, assess the level of police involvement, and establish whether the force used, if any, was lawful, justified, and proportionate.

IPOA extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to conducting an independent and transparent inquiry and pledged to make its findings public.

It added that appropriate recommendations will be made to relevant agencies should culpability be established, underscoring its statutory mandate to ensure professionalism and accountability within the National Police Service.
