The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, highlighted security progress, democratic reforms and commitment to strengthening continental cooperation during a keynote address at the African Union Summit on Saturday.
President Hassan reaffirmed dedication to enhancing collaboration among African states, particularly in coordinating Africa’s voice at the United Nations Security Council.
He expressed appreciation to AU member states for their confidence in Somalia’s election to the African Union Peace and Security Council for the 2026–2028 term.
President Hassan Sheikh notes the successful one-person, one-vote elections held in the Banadir region.
He described them as a historic step forward in Somalia’s state-building and democratic transition.
The Somali leader noted preparations are underway to expand direct elections nationwide.
The President further addressed what he described as actions by Israel that infringe upon Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He thanked African nations for their unified stance rejecting such violations.
President Hassan Sheikh called on African countries to strengthen unity, cooperation and collective problem-solving.
He emphasised that sovereignty remains the cornerstone of Africa’s future development and partnership.
