Garissa Senator Abdul Haji Courts Elders in Strategic 2027 Gubernatorial Bid

Garissa Senator Abdul Haji held a meeting with elders of Samawathal Geet led by Sultan Hassan Sultan Omar Sultan Shurie.

The move is a step in his 2027 Garissa County gubernatorial bid which has attracted numerous candidates.

Senator Abdul Haji described the high-level engagement with the elders as part of broader political deliberations and consultations.

Elders play a central role in Somali politics, which is anchored on a system of negotiated democracy and consensus-building.

The visit is particularly notable as Senator Haji becomes the first candidate to formally engage the Samawathal Geet in what is expected to culminate in a formal application to the council of elders.

The move positions him strategically within Garissa’s traditional consultative framework, where endorsement by respected elders often carries political weight.

In this model, community elders convene to deliberate, consult widely, and build unity around preferred candidates before all electoral contests.

Senator Abdul Haji emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue, unity, and collective decision-making as the 2027 political process begins to take shape.

Their discussions also focused on community cohesion and structured consultations ahead of the governor’s race.

Sen. Abdul Haji is among top contenders for the 2027 Garissa Gubernatorial seat. Others include Amb. Ali Korane, Former Principal Secretary Abdiqani Dubat, Mohamed Moulid Shurie and Ahmed Ibrahim Abass, popularly known as Bishar Ijara.

Abdul Haji meets elders of the Samawathal Geet led by Sultan Hassan Sultan Omar Sultan Shurie in Garissa County ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race.
