CS Duale urged residents to support transformative initiatives that create real opportunities for young people.

President William Ruto and Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki were received in Mandera County during the last day of their Northern Kenya tour, where they disbursed funds under the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project.

The Mandera disbursement is aimed at advancing youth empowerment and inclusive growth.

The five-year, World Bank–funded initiative seeks to empower over 820,000 youth aged 18–35 through a 50 thousand shilling business grants to tackle unemployment. In Mandera County alone, 2,540 youth from 30 wards received a total of 63 million shillings to start enterprises and build sustainable livelihoods.

Nationally, the programme has already reached 120,000 youth across 1,420 wards.President William Ruto also announced that the Mandera Border Post will reopen in April, ending a prolonged closure that has cut off families and disrupted cross-border trade between Kenya and Somalia.

Speaking in Mandera on Thursday, the President said the reopening would restore connectivity between communities on both sides of the border and revive economic activity in the region.

The Head of State also addressed the persistent power shortages in Mandera County, announcing short-term and long-term measures to stabilise electricity supply.

He said the government will install a 3-megawatt generator to ease the current crisis as plans are accelerated to connect the county to the Ethiopian power grid.

The connection to Ethiopia will provide a more reliable and sustainable power solution for residents and businesses in the region.
