Garissa Teachers Training College (GTTC) has recorded a surge in student enrollment, growing from just 104 students in 2023 to an unprecedented 1,718 registered learners today.

The record makes it one of the fastest expansions for a teacher training institution in the region.

Garissa Township MP Rtd Major Dekow Barrow inaugurated 10 newly constructed modern classrooms and a 200-student hostel at the college.

He said infrastructure improvement at the facility is both a response to and a catalyst for the institution’s rapid growth.

Rtd Major Barrow noted that GTTC’s transformation reflects a firm belief that institutions in Garissa can compete favorably with the best across the country.

“This kind of growth does not happen by chance,” he said.

“It is the result of steady support, clear vision, and a commitment to creating quality learning environments right here at home.”

“This college is fast becoming a pillar of education in our region,” he said.

“We will continue supporting it until every willing student has the space, support, and opportunity to pursue their training.”

KNUT Garissa Branch secretary general Abdirizack Hussein attributed the sharp rise in enrollment to deliberate leadership, sustained investment, and renewed confidence in local institutions.

He said the expanded facilities are part of a broader strategy to address the chronic teacher shortage in the greater northern region by training more educators locally.

“With improved infrastructure, students can now learn in a more conducive, dignified, and supportive environment—reducing the need to seek teacher training opportunities outside the county,” he added.

The availability of modern classrooms and student accommodation is expected to boost the institution’s capacity and appeal. This will enable it to admit more qualified applicants than ever before.

The college is positioning itself as a key driver of educational development and teacher workforce expansion in Garissa and the wider region.
