Garissa Top Beneficiaries as Counties Receive Sh6.73 Billion Under KUSP II

Garissa County is among the leading beneficiaries in the latest allocation of Sh6.73 billion under the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP) Phase Two for the 2025/2026 financial year.

According to a gazette notice dated February 6, 2026, National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi confirmed that the funds, sourced from the International Development Association (IDA)-World Bank credit, will finance development projects in selected towns and municipalities across the country.

Garissa County secured Sh626 million, placing it among the top-funded counties in the programme. The allocation will be shared between Garissa town and Dadaab to support urban infrastructure and municipal development projects.

The funding is ring-fenced for urban transformation initiatives aimed at improving service delivery, infrastructure, and overall living standards in the designated urban centres.

“The allocations are intended to empower municipalities and county administrations to implement key urban development projects that directly benefit local communities,” reads the gazette notice.

Kiambu County received the highest allocation of Sh1.61 billion, which will be distributed among Ruiru, Kikuyu, Thika, Juja, Kiambu town and Limuru.

Garissa’s Sh626 million allocation positions it as one of the top beneficiaries nationally and the highest-funded county in the North Eastern region under this phase.

Other counties that received allocations include Turkana with Sh667 million, Uasin Gishu with Sh466 million, Kajiado with Sh418 million, and Kisumu with Sh411 million.

In North Eastern, Mandera County was allocated Sh172 million for Mandera town and El Wak, while Wajir County received Sh88 million for Wajir town.

The Kenya Urban Support Programme Phase Two seeks to strengthen urban governance and enhance infrastructure development in fast-growing towns and municipalities. The funds are expected to finance projects such as road upgrades, drainage systems, street lighting, market development, and other public amenities.

County administrations have been urged to ensure prudent use of the funds and uphold accountability standards in implementing the projects.

The Sh626 million injection presents a significant opportunity to accelerate urban transformation in Garissa town and Dadaab.

It aims to improve service delivery and boosting economic activities in the two key urban centres.
